Angkor Wat's Strangler Figs
The ancient ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, built over 900 years ago, are slowly being overtaken by monstrous strangler figs (Ficus gibbosa) and giant silk-cotton trees. These trees wrap their massive roots around doorways, walls, and crumbling stone structures, appearing as though they are swallowing the temple whole. The sight of these thick, snaking roots creeping over the ruins has earned Angkor Wat a reputation as one of the most mystical and haunted sites in the world.
